TEPIS IN SHORT Founded in 1990, TEPIS stands for the Polish Society of Sworn and Specialized Translators. Its aims are to enrich and disseminate the knowledge of the art of translation and to represent the interests of professional translators in the cooperation with the Polish government. The TEPIS Society is a member of the International Federation of Translators (FIT) and the European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association (EULITA). Our Society today boasts a membership of some 800, mainly sworn translators. TEPIS is proud to have organized 33 domestic conferences and 6 international seminars since 1990, at which some 1607 papers were delivered. „Lingua Legis”, the renowned journal for legal translators and interpreters, formerly published by Translegis Publishing House, is now published by the Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw, with TEPIS auspices continued. Twenty years ago when TEPIS was founded, a development had just begun in Europe that eventually led to a larger European Union in which TEPIS has become a major player in the course of the twenty years of its existence. As an onlooker from outside, I was always amazed at the dynamism with which your association became established – first on a national scene here in Poland and eventually on an international scene in FIT. As an attendant of one of the first fora on legal interpreting and translation here in Warsaw, I quickly realized how serious Polish legal interpreters and translators were about creating a legal basis for the profession, in defining the requirements for admission to the legal interpreting and translation professions, as well as in improving working and remuneration conditions. The initiative had its origins in the urgent need to consolidate and train specialist translators in order to meet the demands of the rapid political and economic changes in Poland.
